Cristian Rivera Foundation December 2010 Newsletter

Happy holidays from the Cristian Rivera Foundation!

This holiday season, the Cristian Rivera Foundation is thinking of those whose celebration is marred by the realities of Pontine Glioma (DIPG). Children like Jordan Malave, the 5-year-old boy from Brooklyn who has been living with DIPG for more than two years. Jordan and his parents met John “Gungie” Rivera and it’s inspiring to see how well he is doing with the tumor at this stage. He has gone through ups and downs with his treatment but he’s currently doing well. His MRI just came back this month saying he’s stable. The entire Cristian Rivera Foundation family is excited by the news and has him in our thoughts and prayers.

Like Jordan, there are 200-300 children diagnosed in the United States every year with DIPG. Their families know that this might be their last Christmas, New Years or other celebration they’ll have with their children. Many of those young kids will be spending the holidays in the hospital, which is a feeling John knows well since he spent Christmas 2008 in the hospital with Cristian. And then there are those who already succumbed to the disease this year. Don’t forget that DIPG can take a life in as little as 3 months; sometimes as long as 18. For those families, it’s the first of many holidays without their child. For them this usually joyous time of year will never be the same.

The Cristian Rivera Foundation is working to make that grim reality disappear. The money we raise goes toward increasing awareness about the disease and funding research and clinical trials that will one day lead to its cure. So please think of the Cristian Rivera Foundation when making your holiday gift purchases. We recently debuted the “On the Right Track” pendant, which Joan Hornig Jewelry designed specifically for the benefit of the Cristian Rivera Foundation. The two-inch sterling silver pendant, which hangs on a black suede cord, was inspired by the work of the Cristian Rivera Foundation and the foundation receives 100% of the proceeds from each $75 pendant sold. You can find this, as well as signature foundation t-shirts and wristbands, under the shop tab at cristianriverafoundation.org. You may also wish to make a charitable donation on behalf of loved ones or yourself this holiday season. That can be done by clicking the donation tab at cristianriverafoundation.org.

While you’re online, please visit the Cristian Rivera Foundation’s new Facebook pages. We recently launched an official page, which you can access by following here, or follow here to join our fan page. For up-to-the-minute information on the foundation, be sure to follow us on Twitter at twitter.com/tweetcrf.

One piece of news you’re likely to see on our websites is the addition of two new committee members: Stephanie Carrera and Tony Ferrara.

Cristian Rivera Foundation committee memberModel/TV personality Stephanie Carrera is the host of "IviveH2O Your Hispanic Obsession," as well as "TV Exclusive" with renowned animator David Marin. Carrera has interviewed several actors, singers and community opinion leaders over the years, including Carlos Ponce, Jose Guzman, John Leguizamo, Bachata Heights, Double T and Crock, Nina Sky, Aventura team members and many more. Besides being a presenter and model, Stephanie has also appeared in commercials and music videos. She has served as an emcee at various events, as well as an ambassador for Coalicion Latinoamericana Internacional. We are proud to have Stephanie Carrera join the Cristian Rivera Foundation family and we look forward to working with her and all of our cherished Committee Members to rid the world of DIPG once and for all.

Cristian Rivera Foundation committee memberTony Ferrara is the Finance Manager at Koeppel Nissan in Jackson Heights, New York. Following his graduation from Bayside High School in Queens, Ferrara began his career at Koeppel Nissan, starting out in the parts department. He received a variety of promotions over the years, working through almost all functions of the dealership. Twenty five years later, Ferrara is in charge expediting paperwork and generating loans, acting as the mediator between the banks and the customers.

So please remember to visit our website, cristianriverafoundation.org, to make a tax-deductible donation or purchase a wristband, t-shirt or pendant to help those less fortunate than you. We thank you for all of your support throughout 2010 and may 2011 be the year we say goodbye to Pontine Glioma forever.

Cristian Rivera Foundation November 2010 Newsletter

Greetings from the Cristian Rivera Foundation.

Welcome to the Cristian Rivera Foundation’s November newsletter. Our first order of business is of course to thank everyone who attended the Second Annual Cristian Rivera Foundation Gala at New York City event space Quo on Tuesday, October 19. It was thanks to your generous participation that we were able to give Dr. Mark Souweidane of Weill Cornell Medical Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering a $30,000 donation.

As you may remember from Dr. Souweidane’s editorial piece that ran in this newsletter earlier in the year, he and his team have been committed to the mission of offering children with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) a safe and novel treatment option. Right now Pontine Glioma has no cure and it kills all 300 children in the United States diagnosed with it each year. “Finally, after 12 years of preclinical testing, [my colleagues and I] have designed a treatment option for children with DIPG that uses convection-enhanced delivery (CED) and a tumor specific agent called a monoclonal antibody,” said Dr. Souweidane, who was one of the doctors to perform routine shunt surgeries on Cristian. “The drug delivery method CED bypasses the blood-brain barrier…separating the blood and the brain… thus delivering drugs directly to the tumor.”

The Cristian Rivera Foundation is proud to be one of the brain tumor foundations supporting Dr. Souweidane’s research. We have so much faith in his work that we also awarded him the Vision of Hope Award in recognition of his dedication and commitment to curing this terrible disease.

Dr. Souweidane was one of many award recipients that night. John “Gungie” Rivera presented Committee Members Alex Garcia and Ricardo Cardona with Outstanding Service Awards for their tireless efforts and generosity, as well as for the delicious food they donated to the gala. Committee Members Tedsmooth and Kenya Bradix each got the Cristian Rivera Humanitarian Award for their dedication to the community and the foundation, respectively. Both of them were very close to Cristian and were touched by the surprise honor. Rivera also presented a special posthumous honor to Ralph Mercado, Sr., who passed away from a brain tumor five weeks after Cristian Rivera lost his life to Pontine Glioma. Committee Member Ralph Mercado III accepted the award in memory of his father’s admirable character, lifetime achievements, and courage in his battle with cancer.

We also auctioned off some great one-of-a-kind items and experiences in our live and silent auctions. Lucky winners walked away with an autographed jersey from Carlos Beltran; a painting by Ouattara Watts; baseballs signed by Derek Jeter, Bob Gibson and Hank Aaron; a Cristian Rivera Foundation t-shirt autographed by iCarly star Miranda Cosgrove; a soccer ball signed by David Beckham; a football autographed by all of the New York Giants; boxing gloves autographed by legendary boxer Muhammad Ali and a date with “Las Gemelas Lulu y Lala” from The Luis Jimenez Show on X96.3. We also offered a weekend at the W Hotel in Hoboken, including dinner and lounge for both nights; and a party for 25 people catered by Alex Garcia and Ricardo Cardona, who cooked, cleaned and provided both liquor and staff. The bidding got so intense for this that Alex Garcia decided to triple the offer and gave parties to the three highest bidders. Thanks to all the money raised from these auctions, we were able to send Dr. Souweidane an additional $10,000 toward his research.

If you were at the gala, you were in the company of such high-profile guests as Dangerous Minds actor Renoly Santiago, actor/singer Frankie Negron, Committee Member and rapper Jim Jones, legendary producer and Committee Member Little Louie Vega, Committee Member Funkmaster Flex, Committee Member J.I. Starr of La Mega, singer George Lamond, comedian Ruperto Vanderpool, Committee Member Mr. Olympia Victor Martinez, Committee Member and music producer Boy Wonder of Chosen Few, Committee Member DJ Camilo, painter Ouatarra Watts, Committee Member and celebrity photographer Johnny Nunez, independent film producer/photographer Daniel Hastings, singer Brenda K. Starr, singer O’Neill McKnight, Committee Member and film producer David Maldonado, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Former Bronx Borough President and Committee Member Fernando Ferrer, and Committee Member and former New York Knicks All Star Anthony Mason.

Mason—who was inducted into the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame in September and the Tennessee State University Sports Hall of Fame this month—was so moved by the message of hope at this year’s gala that he has decided to make the Cristian Rivera Foundation his official charity.

Not only are we proud to report that news, and express our great thanks to Anthony for the gesture, but we are also delighted to welcome “Las Gemelas Lulu y Lala,” aka Marissa and Marianela Gonzalez to the Cristian Rivera Foundation family as our two newest Committee Members. We look forward to working with them to realize our goal of finding a cure.

If you missed the gala, there’s still time to make a donation and support our cause. Visit cristianriverafoundation.org and click on the Donation tab. Or click the Shop tab to buy a signature foundation wristband, t-shirt or pendant from Joan Hornig Jewelry. Every tax-deductible donation or purchase brings us closer to a world without Pontine Glioma. Be sure to tell your friends, family and colleagues about the foundation through email, Facebook, Twitter and word of mouth so that they too can get involved. Together we will find a cure. Full Steam Ahead!

Sincerely,
John “Gungie” Rivera, “Forever Cristian’s Daddy,” and all of the members of the Cristian Rivera Committee: Alex Garcia, Andy Epstein, Anthony Mason, Aurora Flores, Boy Wonder, David Maldonado, Denise Miranda, DJ Camilo, Dr. Ben Velazquez, Dr. Mary Saleeby, Dr. Bear Walker, Edward Caban, Elis Pacheco, Fernando Ferrer, Funkmaster Flex, Hamlet Peralta, James R. New York City Marathon Participant Runs in Honor of Cristian Rivera

The Cristian Rivera Foundation had a presence at this year's New York City Marathon thanks to the dedication of Kimberly Colon-Moller. This was Kimberly's fifth time running the marathon and this year, she decided to use the event to raise awareness about Pontine Glioma. As she ran through all five boroughs of New York City, Kimberly not only wore her Cristian Rivera Foundation signature blue wristband but also a picture of Cristian. "I wear my bracelet everyday," she explained, "and I thought wearing his picture might make more people curious about the foundation and hopefully contribute to the cause." Kimberly's assumption proved to be correct as "many people asked who he was and I explained that he was the son of a longtime friend who passed away from this terrible disease and that a foundation has been established in his memory," she continued. "I also provided the website for more info and if they wanted to donate." Kimberly completed the marathon in 5 hours 22 minutes and 4 seconds, and Cristian was with her every step of the way.

The Second Annual Cristian Rivera Foundation Gala Raises Money Toward Curing Inoperable Pediatric Brain Cancer Pontine Glioma

The Cristian Rivera Foundation presented Dr. Mark Souweidane with $30,000 at its Second Annual Gala, which took place at NYC event space Quo on Tuesday, October 19. Dr. Souweidane, who also received the Foundation's Vision of Hope award, has dedicated his career to the goal of curing this inoperable brain stem tumor. This substantial donation was just one of the night's many highlights. Cristian Rivera Foundation September 2010 Newsletter

Monthly Newsletter
September 2010

Greetings from the Cristian Rivera Foundation.

Welcome to the latest edition of the Cristian Rivera Foundation newsletter. September is a very important month for us, both in terms of our goal to cure Pontine Glioma and our personal connection to Cristian Rivera.

September 13th marked what would have been Cristian Rivera’s eighth birthday. His father acknowledged the day by going to a restaurant he and Cristian loved to go to. He then went home and read all of his online journal entries chronicling Cristian’s illness and the Foundation’s milestones.

“I signed Cristian’s guestbook at exactly 12 am today, then lit a candle and prayed,” John wrote in his online journal. “I kissed Cristian’s urn and I spent some time in his room. I could see him sitting there, playing with his trains, as we did so often…He could have played with them for hours, and then we would end the night watching DVDs while I massaged his back, feet and underarms.” For more on John’s remembrances of Cristian on his birthday, click the Journal tab at www.cristianriverafoundation.org.

Symbolically, Cristian’s birthday fell on the same date as the official National Childhood Cancer Awareness Day, a day when we call attention to the pediatric cancers that affect young children like Cristian. In fact, the entire month of September is an important one for causes like ours. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and with 300 children dying from Pontine Glioma alone every year, we can only begin to imagine how many children across the country are affected by pediatric cancers of all types and need to be remembered throughout this very special month.

In the same way that breast cancer is associated with pink and AIDS is associated with red, the color that signifies Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is gold. By wearing a gold ribbon, you can show your support for children and families dealing with cancer, as well as those whose loved ones have been lost.

We at the Cristian Rivera Foundation are proud to acknowledge Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and hope that families all across the country will get the help and funding they need to cure the terrible diseases that take such young, vibrant lives. But our quest doesn’t begin and end in September. It lasts all year round and we won’t rest until a cure for Pontine Glioma is found.

You can help us reach our goal by making a tax-deductible donation, buying a Cristian Rivera Foundation signature blue wristband or t-shirt, or by purchasing a ticket to the Second Annual Cristian Rivera Foundation Gala. This year’s gala will take place on Tuesday, October 19 from 6pm to 10pm at Quo, located at 511 West 28th Street, between 10th and 11th Avenues in New York City. Details on ticket prices, special guests and more will be available soon so be sure to keep checking the News and Events tabs of www.cristianriverafoundation.org.
As always, we thank you for the support you’ve shown us as a valued member of the Cristian Rivera Foundation family. Please visit the Shop tab at www.cristianriveradfoundation.org to purchase t-shirts and wristbands, and continue to spread the word to friends, family and colleagues. Talk about the Foundation, forward this newsletter or even post it on your Facebook, Twitter and other social networking pages so that they too can get involved and help us to cure Pontine Glioma once and for all.

Sincerely,

John “Gungie” Rivera, “Forever Cristian’s Daddy,” and all of the members of the Cristian Rivera Committee: Alex Garcia, Andy Epstein, Anthony Mason, Aurora Flores, Boy Wonder, David Maldonado, Denise Miranda, DJ Camilo, DJ Funkmaster Flex, DJ Tedsmooth, Dr. Ben Velazquez, Dr. Mary Saleeby, Edward Caban, Elis Pacheco, Fernando Ferrer, Hamlet Peralta, James R. The Cristian Rivera Foundation Monthly Newsletter August 2010

Monthly Newsletter
August 2010

Greetings from the Cristian Rivera Foundation.

The Cristian Rivera Foundation is coming off a great anniversary month. Not one, but two events helped raise awareness about our cause.

The first was Mega Jam 2010, which took place on July 17 at The Country Fair Entertainment Park in Medford, NY. Party 105.3 FM put on the event, and station owner and Cristian Rivera Foundation Committee Member Vic Latino made sure to put our logo on marketing materials and more to help raise awareness about the Foundation. We were there giving out t-shirts and wristbands, and John “Gungie” Rivera even took a picture with iCarly star Miranda Cosgrove, who wore the Foundation’s signature blue wristband in front of our step and repeat. Cosgrove and Kiowa Gordon from Twilight hosted the star-studded concert, which featured performances from Lucas Prata, Natasha Bedingfield, Shaggy, Kelis, Jay Sean and more. Both Vic Latino and Party 105.3 on-air talent DJ Serg not only wore the Foundation wristband at the event, but Foundation t-shirts too.

July also ended on a high note with a successful mini-fundraiser at The Bronx’s Latin Kitchen. The restaurant, located at 3841 East Tremont Avenue, becomes a lounge every Thursday night and Latin Kitchen’s DJ Lucho Concepcion and Robert Vasquez organized an event where everyone who came after 10pm paid a $10 donation and received one of the Cristian Rivera Foundation’s signature blue wristbands. The event featured music from resident DJ Victor Vargas, as well as Cristian Rivera Foundation Committee Members DJ Tedsmooth and Ralph Mercado, aka DJ Wreck. Lots of John “Gungie” Rivera’s friends, as well as friends of the Cristian Rivera Foundation came out to support the cause, including Committee Members Kenya Bradix, Solange Osorio and Steve Cox.

Lucho Concepcion and Robert Vasquez are two of the Foundation's newest Committee Members, along with Aurora Flores, President and Creative Director of Aurora Communications.

  • Lucho Concepcion started producing music at 19 and has become one of the most talented disk jockeys and producers in the industry. He has worked with artists like Diddy's group The Dream, No Mercy, DLG, Son by 4, Angel Canales and George Lamond. When not producing, Lucho is still DJing around NYC and all over the world. He's currently doing the midnight show live from LQ on X96.3 FM.

  • Robert Vasquez is a sports marketer, philanthropist and restaurateur. Vazquez signed deals and created product lines for the likes of Mariano Rivera, Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams, James Gandolfini, Hideki Matsui, Brett Gardner, Hank Aaron, Tony Hawk, Muhammad Ali, Joe Namath, David Ortiz, and Jay-Z as part of a large sports marketing and memorabilia firm.Vazquez also serves on the boards for Bronx YMCA, Moving Mountains, and the Erika Roman Memorial Foundation.

  • Aurora Flores is the recipient of numerous awards and is included in Who’s Who in Hispanic America. Currently the President of Aurora Communications, Inc., she was the first Latina editor of Latin New York Magazine and the first female music correspondent for Billboard Magazine. She lectures on Latin music, has composed bilingual songs for Nickelodeon’s “Dora the Explorer,” and recently edited and wrote the foreword for ¡Salsa Talks!  A Musical Heritage Uncovered.

By becoming Committee Members, Lucho, Robert and Aurora are making our Committee stronger and helping us get closer to our goal of curing Pontine Glioma. You can also aid us in our quest for a cure. Donate to the Cristian Rivera Foundation, or buy one of our signature wristbands or t-shirts, by visiting www.cristianriverafoundation.org. Organize your own fundraiser or awareness campaign. Or contact your Congressperson and Senators to let them know that you want to see the National Childhood Brain Tumor Prevention Act made into law.

Our friends at Mira's Movement let us know about the National Childhood Brain Tumor Prevention Act, which would allocate $25 million a year for five years for the first comprehensive research into the causes of brain tumors in children, including genetics, nutrition, the environment, and more. It will give us answers about better treatments and even prevention.

But in order for this bill to pass, people like you, who care about curing pediatric brain tumors like Pontine Glioma, need to write a letter or e-mail, or make a phone call to your federal representatives and urge them to pass the National Childhood Brain Tumor Prevention Act. For more information and quick outlines to write a letter or e-mail, or make a call, visit www.mirasmovement.org/CBTPNA.html.
Promising legislation like this can help make it possible that no one else will have to mourn a child the way everyone at the Cristian Rivera Foundation mourns Cristian Rivera. Committee member Melissa Chung shared some of her memories of Cristian:

Cristian Rivera Foundation committee memberI had the pleasure and honor of meeting and spending time with an angel without wings, Cristian Rivera. Besides the obvious of how special and amazing this little boy was, the one thing that stood out to me was the unique bond that he had with his amazing father! Cristian wanted to be by his side at all times. They needed each other and it was their relationship that kept them strong! It was a love I have never seen before and I was so happy that I had the chance to see it live! I can honestly say true love exists!
Another memory of Cristian was his ability to escape from reality and just be free in a world of make-believe. We would play with all his toys and trains and we were in a world of his imagination that I didn't want to leave! He made this world full of peace, happiness and love. We even had our own song that he and I wrote called "RED." We had some amazing moments together. However sometimes, no matter how much faith we have, we lose the ones we love... But I will never forget Cristian...and sometimes, it's those memories that give me the faith to go on!
I LOVE YOU CRISTIAN! xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxox

Committee Member Tedsmooth also fondly remembers the time he spent with Cristian:

Cristian Rivera Foundation committee member
My memory of Cristian was going to Gungie's office and seeing Cristian all over the place with his toys! He ran that place lol. One day, his mom didn't pack his favorite Thomas train and he lost it. He didn't want to play with anything else or be "Mr. All Smiles." I had no choice but to find that train online and have it shipped overnight to the office. It was a $7 train and the shipping was 10 times that! Lmao! But when Gungie opened that box for him, he was back to "Mr. All Smiles" and that was Cristian. Love you dude, Ted & Ty.

Show how much you care by buying a signature Foundation wristband or t-shirt on the “Shop” page at www.cristianriverafoundation.org. Together we can cure Pontine Glioma. Full steam ahead!

Sincerely,

John “Gungie” Rivera, “Forever Cristian’s Daddy,” and all of the members of the Cristian Rivera Committee: Alex Garcia, Andy Epstein, Anthony Mason, Aurora Flores, Boy Wonder, David Maldonado, Denise Miranda, DJ Camilo, DJ Funkmaster Flex, DJ Tedsmooth, Dr. Ben Velazquez, Dr. Mary Saleeby, Edward Caban, Elis Pacheco, Fernando Ferrer, Hamlet Peralta, James Cruz, James R. Cotto, Jay Hernandez, Jeff & Valerie Lavino, Jim Jones, Jimmy Rodriguez, J.I. Starr, John “Jellybean” Benitez, Johnny Nuñez, Jose Alberto “El Canario,” Joseph Mbeh, Kamar De Los Reyes, Kenya Bradix, Khaliah Ali, Little Louie Vega, Lucho Concepcion, Luis Guzman, Mark Rosner, Mathew “Mateo” Rajkumar, Melissa Chung, Miriam Colon, Murray Richman, Pablo Diaz, Ralph Mercado III, Ray Wong, Ricardo Cardona, Robert Vasquez, Solange Osorio, Steve Cox, Vic Latino, Victor Martinez and William Pla.

Support the National Childhood Brain Tumor Prevention Act

Dear Pediatric Cancer family or family friend,
WE NEED YOUR HELP. The National Childhood Brain Tumor Prevention Act is currently working its way through Congress. If passed, this Act would allocate $25 million a year for five years for the FIRST comprehensive research into the causes of brain tumors in children, including genetics, nutrition, the environment, and more. It will give us answers about better treatments and even prevention. To get this legislation passed we need your help. If families affected by childhood brain tumors—and all those who know them, love them, and understand what they go through--could write a letter, an e-mail, or make a phone call to their federal representatives, the future of our country's children would be brighter. As stated by world renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Patrick Kelly, "once [a child] is diagnosed with brain cancer, it's too late."
  • Thousands of kids are diagnosed with a brain tumor each year and more than 40% of them die.
  • The average age of a child that dies from a brain tumor is 4.
  • More than 60% of those that survive face life-long complications and side effects.
That's why we're asking you to contact your Congressperson and Senators to let them know that you want to see this Act made into law. For more information and quick outlines to write a letter or e-mail, or make a call, visit www.mirasmovement.org/CBTPNA.html. For further assistance or if you have questions, e-mail cbtpna@mirasmovement.org or call (607) 319-4804. Thank you for helping us change the future for children with brain tumors!

The Cristian Rivera Foundation Monthly Newsletter July 2010

Monthly Newsletter July 2010
First Anniversary Issue

Greetings from the Cristian Rivera Foundation.

July marks one year since John “Gungie” Rivera started the Cristian Rivera Foundation. Six months after Cristian Rivera lost his battle with Pontine Glioma, his father dedicated himself to finding a cure and saving future children and their families from the heartbreak associated with this deadly disease.

It’s been an eventful first year, to say the least. Who can forget the Foundation’s first fundraiser gala at New York City indoor/outdoor venue Eden? The site had special significance since it’s where Cristian had his fifth birthday party—the last birthday he was really able to celebrate before Pontine Glioma fully took hold of him. Hosted by comedian Ruperto Vanderpool and emceed by J.I. Starr of La Mega 97.9 FM, the night featured dinner catered by celebrity chefs Ricardo Cardona and Alex Garcia, as well as entertainment from Raul Acosta of Oro Solido and a special speech by former New York City mayoral candidate Bill Thompson.

Photos and videos of the event—which featured such esteemed guests as actor Luis Guzman, actress Miriam Colon, filmmaker Franc Reyes, international Salsa star Jose Alberto “El Canario,” Dina Manzo of Real Housewives of New Jersey and rapper Jim Jones—is available on cristianriverafoundation.org. If you weren’t there to also take part in the festivities, don’t worry. A second event is scheduled for later this year. Keep checking cristianriverafoundation.org for all the details.

Over the past year, the Cristian Rivera Foundation has amassed an impressive Committee that continues to grow month by month. This year alone, we’ve added Luis Guzman, Alex Garcia, Miriam Colon and Mohammad Ali’s daughter, Khalia Ali. Our Committee Members are an essential part of the Foundation’s mission, helping get the word out by wearing Foundation wristbands during public appearances, donating goods and services and selling wristbands as part of our successful Wristband Project.

Another highlight of the Foundation’s first year was the billboard campaign that took place in May on the West Side Highway. “This billboard is something I dreamed of doing since the Foundation started and now that it’s up, people are responding,” John said at the time. “I’ve gotten such positive feedback from friends, family and even strangers. What that tells me is what I set out to do—to raise awareness—is working. And that brings me so much joy.”

That recognition and impact has helped the Cristian Rivera Foundation become a well-respected member of the DIPG community, with established foundations reaching out to one as new as ours. John attended the 8th Annual Dream and Promise Awards Benefit for the Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation, as well as the Fifth Annual Fundraising Event put on by Voices Against Brain Cancer, a foundation started by John’s friend Mario Lichtenstein. At both events, John was struck by the strength of resolve both on the part of the foundations and the parents dealing with Pontine Glioma. “It made me very emotional to hear the parents speak whose children had passed away. So many memories come flooding back after talking with parents who went through the same thing I did,” John said. “I know how difficult it is to keep on living after such a great loss. It takes courage to continue fighting this battle after some would say we’ve already lost.”

As we celebrate our first birthday, we look forward to continuing the fight and we pay tribute to the children who, like Cristian, were not able to survive. John was at the hospital when we lost Cristian’s friend Valeria last November, helping her parents who had become “like family” to him. And just this past month, news came that Danielle Rosario died on Father’s Day. John had come to know her father Larry through a friend from the DIPG community named Bee Farina, whose daughter Meghan also died from Pontine Glioma. John and Larry would talk about the different types of treatment, and they came to be friends by the time Danielle had passed away.

There are 300 new cases of Pontine Glioma detected each year, so more children will meet the same fate as Valeria, Danielle and Cristian if we don’t do something to help. Go to the “Shop” tab at cristianriverafoundation.org to buy a Foundation wristband or one of our new Foundation t-shirts. Once you’ve bought one, wear it proudly and explain to your friends and family just why our cause is so important. You can also sell wristbands to your friends and family on behalf of the Foundation as part of our Wristband Project. All of the money we raise goes towards promising research that will one day result in a cure.
Thank you for your continued support throughout our first year and for all of the hard work that we will do together in the years to come.

Sincerely,

John “Gungie” Rivera, “Forever Cristian’s Daddy,” and all of the members of the Cristian Rivera Committee: Alex Garcia, Andy Epstein, Anthony Mason, Boy Wonder, David Maldonado, Denise Miranda, DJ Camilo, DJ Funkmaster Flex, DJ Tedsmooth, Dr. Ben Velazquez, Dr. Mary Saleeby, Edward Caban, Elis Pacheco, Fernando Ferrer, Hamlet Peralta, James Cruz, James R. Cristian Rivera Foundation Has Strong Presence at All-Star Concert

July 17 was a star-studded day at The Country Fair Entertainment Park in Medford, NY. That was the site of Mega Jam 2010, the all-day event offering carnival rides, food, family fun and music. Party 105.3 FM put on the event, which was hosted by Miranda Cosgrove, star of Nickelodeon's iCarly, and Kiowa Gordon, best known as Embry Call in the Twilight series. JWoWW from MTV's Jersey Shore was seen there with some of her castmates and musicians Lucas Prata, Natasha Bedingfield, Shaggy, Kelis, Jay Sean and many others could be spotted rocking the stage.
The most exciting presence at Mega Jam 2010, however, had to be the Cristian Rivera Foundation. The event helped raise awareness about the Foundation, and many of the celebrities on hand stopped to take their picture in front of a Foundation-branded step and repeat. The Foundation gave out t-shirts and wristbands. Miranda Cosgrove wore a signature Foundation wristband. Party 105.3     on-air talent DJ Serg and Party 105.3 owner and Cristian Rivera Foundation   Committee Member Vic Latino not only wore the wristband, but a Foundation t-shirt too.

New Jersey Day Care Center Supports the Cristian Rivera Foundation

The Cristian Rivera Foundation continues to touch people’s hearts with its mission to cure inoperable pediatric brain stem tumor Pontine Glioma. Jeannie Perez, of Newark, NJ’s Family Affair Childcare, created a banner inviting families at her daycare center and in the community to support the Cristian Rivera Foundation. She even offered a period of free daycare to the family who sold the most Cristian Rivera Foundation wristbands. Her contest inspired others to get the word out and collectively, the families sold 50 wristbands. Having everyday people go to bat for the Cristian Rivera Foundation gives hope not only that its awareness campaign is working but also that a cure for Pontine Glioma is within reach.

The Cristian Rivera Foundation Monthly Newsletter June 2010

Monthly Newsletter June 2010

Greetings from the Cristian Rivera Foundation.

Though our month-long billboard campaign came to a close, the Cristian Rivera Foundation is showing no signs of slowing down. Our billboard has earned such overwhelmingly positive responses from friends, family and even strangers. It has truly been touching and it’s shown us that our quest to raise awareness about Pontine Glioma is working.

The Cristian Rivera Foundation has also caught the attention of one of our peers, the Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation. John “Gungie” Rivera recently attended the foundation’s 8th Annual Dream and Promise Awards Benefit, where he got to meet the parents of both survivors and casualties of brain tumors, including Pontine Glioma. “To have a foundation that's been around for 22 years invite me to their event and recognize a foundation like mine-one that's not even one year old-really felt good,” John said about the event. You can read more about this in his journal at www.cristianriverafoundation.org/journal.

John also attended Project Sunshine’s Seventh Annual Benefit Celebration: "United We Shine" at the Waldorf Astoria as the guest of recent Committee Member Khaliah Ali. We can no longer call her our newest Committee Member because two other successful people have recently signed on to help our Foundation with its cause:

Cristian Rivera Foundation committee memberLuis Guzman is a character actor from New York who has appeared in countless movies and television shows. Most recently, Guzman appeared in HBO’s hit series How to Make it in America. He has also been seen on Oz, Law and Order, NYPD Blue and Walker, Texas Ranger, as well as in feature films like The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, Carlito's Way, Magnolia, Out of Sight, Boogie Nights, Punch Drunk Love, Traffic, Anger Management, and School for Scoundrels.

Cristian Rivera Foundation committee memberAlex Garcia is a Nuevo Latino chef who has appeared on the Food Network and written cookbooks like In a Cuban Kitchen. Garcia attended the Culinary Institute of America and later worked alongside famed Nuevo Cuban chef Douglas Rodriguez for four years at Yuca restaurant in Miami. Garcia has been involved with many highly-respected New York restaurants, including Erizo Latino in Soho, Babalu, Patria, Calle Ocho and, most recently, Habana Room.

I’ve mentioned in past newsletters, the Cristian Rivera Foundation has pledged funds to Dr. Mark Souweidane, one of the doctors who performed a routine shunt surgery on Cristian. Dr. Souweidane offered an explanation of what he calls a “novel theraputic approach” and why his research is so promising and revolutionary:

Cristian Rivera Foundation committee memberFor over a decade Dr. Mark Souweidane’s laboratory has been committed to the mission of offering children with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) a safe and novel treatment option. That exploration is finally coming to realization with the promise of helping children with little options.

DIPG is currently incurable. It is located in the brain stem, a central and critical structure where vital and basic functions are controlled. The tumor is highly infiltrative, which means the cancer tissue is intertwined with normal brain tissue. This location and pattern of growth make surgical removal impossible and unsafe. The current treatment approach is radiation therapy. However, it is expected that all children will eventually progress and succumb to this dreadful disease within a year. Therefore there is an urgent need for a new approach to treating this incurable cancer of childhood.

The blood vessels in the brain are different from those in other parts of the body in that there is a barrier called the blood-brain barrier (BBB) separating the blood and the brain. This barrier, in normal conditions, protects the brain from bacteria and toxins. However, this barrier also prevents many therapeutic drugs from entering the brain and the tumor. This is believed one of the major reasons that current chemotherapy is not effective in treating this disease. The drug delivery method called convection-enhanced delivery (CED) bypasses the BBB thus delivering drugs directly to the tumor.

Finally after 12 years of preclinical testing, Dr. Souweidane and his colleagues have designed a treatment option for children with DIPG that uses CED and a tumor specific agent called a monoclonal antibody. Dr. Souweidane is confident that the clinical trail will open this year, but is in need for further funding to conduct the study. Support for such novel therapeutic approaches is critical since the costs will not be covered by insurance companies. Additionally, the laboratory of Dr. Souweidane continues to explore other novel treatment options for these children by exploring the molecular features of these tumors and methods to track therapeutic agents once delivered by CED in the brain stem.
It is through important research like this that we can one day realize our dream of a world without Pontine Glioma; a world where no one will have to lose a child, relative or friend like Cristian Rivera. Committee Member J.I. Starr offered his rememberances of Cristian:

Cristian Rivera Foundation committee memberCristian Rivera made his presence felt everywhere he went. While working for Victory 2 Multimedia as Cristian’s dad’s marketing director, I would be sitting at my desk with the door open and Cristian would come strolling into the office like a top-level employee. He would ask me to do my Donald Duck impression… man did he get a kick out of that. I would look at him and ask where is he. He would say “who?” and then I would say, in that voice, “Donald Duck” with the Donald laugh…I can never forget the response I got. His face would light up! I got a kick out of the fact that no matter how many times I would do the same thing, it would get the same response.
He was always drawing. Paper and pencil in hand, he would come into my office searching for markers that he knew I had stashed. He would sit and start drawing whatever came to mind at the time…never a set plan. That boy made me laugh out loud many times. One of my favorite moments was when he walked into my office, grabbed the newspaper and taped it to my desk, making a “curtain.” Next thing you know it became a Fort with the entire desk draped in newspaper. He happily played with some Thomas trains, peaking out every now and then to make sure I was still standing guard. I always asked myself, “is this kid only 5 years old???” What a treasure.
Cristian’s former babysitter, Virginia Rivera, also shared some of what she remembers most about her time with Cristian:

Cristian Rivera Foundation committee memberI came into Cristian’s life when he was four years old , only a short time before he was diagnosed with Pontine Glioma. Even at four , the knowledge he possessed was shocking, as he always seemed to know more than his years . He had an uncanny ability to read people and was surprisingly accurate in his results. Coming into his life as a stranger and seeing how he responded to those he did not know ( or trust), I was a little nervous that Cris would not care much for my company. At first he didn’t even care to know my name. My worries were for naught though, as the bond between Cris and I grew. Once he started speaking to me it was hard to get him to stop . When he did , it was very likely to hear him call out BUH-GINIA within the minute! I never expected I would be so enraptured by Cris, but he had proven himself irresistible. Everyone wanted to be his friend, but I actually achieved it! Caring for Cris was a different experience then I was accustomed to . As a sitter one hopes to create a strong bond through support and various educational tactics, and to leave a lasting positive impression on a child’s life. I do believe in this situation Cris was the one who left a long-lasting impression on me. Falling in love with this exceptional child was easy as everything he did proved inspirational and intelligent. I will never forget the impact he has made on my life.
As always, we invite you to share your memories of Cristian, opinion pieces and other submissions for use in future editions of this newsletter. The Cristian Rivera Foundation is accomplishing so much and we appreciate everything you have done and will do to make our Foundation a success. Full steam ahead!

Sincerely,

John “Gungie” Rivera, “Forever Cristian’s Daddy,” and all of the members of the Cristian Rivera Committee: Alex Aviles, Alex Garcia, Andy Epstein, Anthony Mason, Bill Marin, Boy Wonder, David Maldonado, Denise Miranda, DJ Camilo, DJ Funkmaster Flex, DJ Tedsmooth, Dr. Ben Velazquez, Dr. Mary Saleeby, Edward Caban, Elis Pacheco, Fernando Ferrer, Hamlet Peralta, James Cruz, James R. Cotto, Jay Hernandez, Jay Marin, Jeff & Valerie Lavino, Jim Jones, Jimmy Rodriguez, J.I. Starr, John “Jellybean” Benitez, Jessy Terrero, Johnny Nuñez, Jose Alberto “El Canario,” Joseph Mbeh, Kamar De Los Reyes, Kenya Bradix, Khaliah Ali, Little Louie Vega, Luis Guzman, Maria Marin, Mark Rosner, Mathew “Mateo” Rajkumar, Melissa Chung, Miriam Colon, Murray Richman, Pablo Diaz, Ralph Mercado III, Ray Wong, Ricardo Cardona, Solange Osorio, Steve Cox, Ulysses Terrero, Vic Latino, Victor Martinez and William Pla.

The Cristian Rivera Foundation Monthly Newsletter May 2010

Monthly Newsletter May 2010

Greetings from the Cristian Rivera Foundation.

The West Side Highway is getting a little more scenic for the month of May. The next time you drive past 132nd Street, look up. A 68x20 billboard facing south on the north side of the highway will be displaying a familiar cause---ours.

The Cristian Rivera Foundation has purchased this billboard space for one month beginning Monday, May 10. The billboard appears in Cristian's favorite color blue and sports a picture of Cristian, our Foundation website and the slogan "Help our kids. Let's find a cure for Pontine Glioma." Talk about a talking point! Make sure to point the billboard out to everyone in your car as you pass by and direct them to our website, http://www.cristianriverafoundation.org/, where they can learn about the disease, see news and photos, and even buy a Cristian Rivera Foundation wristband.

Be on the lookout this Monday, May 10. The Cristian Rivera Foundation billboard is coming, full steam ahead.

Having Cristian smiling down on so many people as they drive along the West Side Highway has made Committee Member Kenya Bradix remember some of the great times he had with Cristian Rivera:

Cristian Rivera Foundation committee member"One of my funniest memories of Cristian is the day I brought Cris home after having spent a nice day with his dad, John. Cristian's dad had brought him an ice cream cone to eat on the way home. Now mind you, I'd just cleaned the car inside and out. Anyway, I'm stopped at a traffic light and Cris is pretty quiet, for the most part because he was eating his ice cream. Or so I thought. I finally got around to the front of his building to drop him off and I felt something cold and wet soaking through my jacket and shirt. I stepped out of the car to see what it was and, sure enough, Cris quietly dropped his cone down the front seat---"the driver's seat." I looked at Cris in the back seat and he had the biggest smile. I asked him why he did that and his reply was, "I didn't want it anymore." Needless to say, me knowing Cris the way that I do, I could only stay mad for about 13 or 14 seconds before I fell out laughing because the answer was so funny and unexpected."

Committee Member Pablo Diaz also put his memories of Cristian down on paper. Here's what he had to say:
Cristian Rivera Foundation committee member"Cristian Rivera: there are not enough adjectives to describe him. He was a charismatic boy who made his presence felt when he entered a room. I know I sound like I am describing a grown person, but this was just a little boy who lit up a room when he entered it and commanded attention. Cristian's smile was so contagious that he could make you do anything he would ask by just smiling. There were so many moments that we shared in such a short time. How do you focus on just one? From the day I knew he was in his mom's belly to the days when his dad would bring him to the office, we had a bond. I discovered very quickly that he had a great sense of humor and liked playing pranks. He got a real kick out of giving me a hard time, but that was also his charm. I also quickly discovered how smart he was and that he had a real passion for trains, specifically Thomas trains. He would name all the characters and train parts from memory. He knew how to find rare Thomas trains and order them on eBay and other search engines. I spent many hours in front of the computer with Cristian on my lap as we would go on Google and eBay and negotiate for the rarest Thomas trains. It seems so unfair to get to know Cristian and have to lose him so shortly after. His memory, and the unconditional love that he blessed me with, will be with me forever. My reason for being a Committee Member of his Foundation is to find a cure for Pontine Glioma. I want to give children a fighting chance to conquer this monster. No more families should have to suffer in losing wonderful, charismatic, dynamic and loving little boys like Cristian Rivera. Love you Cristian."

If you have stories to share about your memories of Cristian, ways you're getting the word out about this Foundation, or your feelings about our quest to cure Pontine Glioma, we'd love to hear from you. You could be featured in an upcoming newsletter.

As always, we thank you for the hard work and dedication you've given this Foundation. We encourage you to continue to spread the word, wear your Foundation wristband, and urge your family and friends to make a tax-deductible donation toward curing Pontine Glioma.

Sincerely, John "Gungie" Rivera, "Forever Cristian's Daddy," and all of the members of the Cristian Rivera Committee: Alex Aviles, Andy Epstein, Ann Lee Caceres, Anthony Mason, Bill Marin, Boy Wonder, David Maldonado, Denise Miranda, DJ Camilo, DJ Funkmaster Flex, DJ Tedsmooth, Dr. Ben Velazquez, Dr. Mary Saleeby, Edward Caban, Elis Pacheco, Fernando Ferrer, Hamlet Peralta, James Cruz, James R. Cotto, Jay Hernandez, Jay Marin, Jeff & Valerie Lavino, Jim Jones, Jimmy Rodriguez, J.I. Cristian Rivera Foundation to Appear on West Side Highway Billboard

The Cristian Rivera Foundation is taking its fight to the streets. The New York-based 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization will be appearing on a 68x20 billboard, facing south on the north side of the West Side Highway and 132nd Street in Manhattan, for one month beginning May 10, 2010.

Renowned NYC event promoter John "Gungie" Rivera created the Foundation in July 2009 to find a cure for Pontine Glioma, the rare pediatric brain stem tumor that claimed the life of his six-year-old son. Generally, this inoperable tumor affects children between the ages of 1
and 9, with the average lifespan of a child after diagnosis falling between three and 18 months. Only 300 cases of Pontine Glioma are discovered in the United States each year, and the Cristian Rivera Foundation strives to improve the lives of children and families dealing with the disease through awareness and clinical research program funding.

With prominent placement of this billboard, the Cristian Rivera Foundation hopes to invite scores of New York City residents and visitors to log onto the website, learn about Pontine Glioma, make a donation or purchase one of the Foundation's signature blue wristbands to symbolize their support of the cause.

As the billboard says, "Help our kids. Let's find a cure for Pontine Glioma."

The Cristian Rivera Foundation Monthly Newsletter April 2010

Monthly Newsletter April 2010

Greetings from the Cristian Rivera Foundation.

Spring is the time when flowers bloom and gardens grow, so it's only fitting that we have something growing too-our Committee. This month, the Cristian Rivera Foundation welcomed two new Committee Members to our close-knit team:

Khaliah Ali is an Emmy Award-nominated talk show host, former Ford model and fashion designer. The daughter of Muhammad Ali is also an author. Her book Fighting Weight chronicles her quest for the perfect weight through gastric banding surgery and the positive affect her weight loss has had on her life. Khaliah has been named the spokesperson for New Jersey's Banding Centers of America, which supports patients that have undergone gastric lap band surgery, by providing gastric band adjustments, education and more.

Miriam Colon is a veteran of stage and screen. This Puerto Rican-born actress made her acting debut in 1953 and has played many memorable characters throughout her multi-decade career. She appeared in such feature films as Scarface, All the Pretty Horses and Goal!, as well as on Guiding Light and, most recently, HBO's How to Make it in America. Perhaps the venture she's most proud of is the Puerto Rican Traveling Theater. Miriam founded the theater, where she serves as President, Artistic Director and head of the Board of Directors. Located at 304 West 47th Street in Midtown Manhattan, the Puerto Rican Traveling Theater puts on significant works of Hispanic playwrights and offers seasonal workshops in many theatrical disciplines.

While we are delighted to welcome Miriam and Khaliah to the Cristian Rivera Foundation Family, we also want to acknowledge the great work done by everyone involved in the Foundation. Our Wristband Project continues to be a great success. Participants get 10 wristbands, along with all the materials needed to teach people about our mission. All you have to do is sell the wristbands and send us a check for the money you've raised. To get involved, email wristbandproject@cristianriverafoundation.org or call 212-779-2222.

To offer some insight into the Cristian Rivera Foundation's goals and why they are so important, Committee Member Ben Velazquez graciously wrote the following editorial:

I was reading a local paper when I decided to contact John Rivera and write this small piece for the newsletter.

On one page of the paper there was an article depicting a new medication for Arthritis and joint pain that had shown a significant decrease in inflammation and which was in huge demand all over the country.

The article on the opposite page was describing a new weight loss supplement that had shown very positive results in clinical trials and was flying off the shelves.

Please understand that I am not attempting to diminish the importance of these two medical issues as I believe that they both deserve to be studied and attacked with all the science and dedication necessary to provide those who need the help all that is possible.

It just raises a question about why virtually unknown, fatal systemic diseases such as Pontine Glioma don't get the attention and the funding necessary just because they don't provide the potential financial windfall that these other topics do.

There is some very exciting science with some of the smartest people at the forefront that could provide answers to helping the children afflicted with fatal conditions such as Pontine Glioma.

One example is the work being done in the field of energy medicine.

Scientists are using different modalities in order to supply the brain with negative ions and/or specific frequency protocols intended to stop the rapid cellular growth. Cancer cells divide and multiply rapidly in the brain. These cancer cells carry special types of electrically-charged elements that play a role during the cell division process. Other healthy cells in the brain multiply at a much slower rate, if at all, and thus rarely include the same electric properties as the dividing cancer cells. One such treatment involves using a device called the Novo TTF.

The NovoTTF-100A device used in this trial delivers very low intensity, alternating electric fields to the tumor site through the scalp. These fields are known as Tumor Treating Fields or TTFields. Due to the unique shape of cancer cells when they are multiplying, TTFields cause the building blocks of these cells to pile up in such a way that the cells physically break apart. In addition, cancer cells also contain miniature building blocks that move essential parts of the cells from place to place during division. TTFields cause these building blocks to fall apart since they have a special type of electric charge. As a result of these two effects, preliminary study data indicates that cancer tumor growth is slowed and may even reverse after continuous exposure to TTFields. Preliminary data also indicates that the TTFields affect the healthy brain cells much less than cancer cells since healthy brain cells multiply at a much slower rate, if at all. Another treatment protocol involves using Frequency specific microcurrent protocols, which deliver very high frequency at an ultra low current that is intended to reprogram the cells to communicate and initiate the healing process themselves.

While these sciences and their respective trials show promise in dealing with conditions such as Pontine Glioma, the business of medicine denies the powers that be the incentive necessary to put more dollars behind the research, development and care.

Awareness should remain the goal of everyone involved in this foundation.

The collective concern will always drive the marketing machine whose primary goal is to create revenue.

Keep the conversation going.
Ben Velazquez

As important as it is to remember that Pontine Glioma is a deadly disease that needs to be cured, we also can't forget that it's the people affected by Pontine Glioma who matter most. Not just those young children afflicted with the disease, but their friends and families who have to watch loved ones suffer and continue to get through life after their nearest and dearest have passed on. Committee Member Solange Osorio offered her memories of Cristian Rivera and how much of an impact he made in her life.

"My Memories With The Little Engine That Could"

There are things in life that happen to us when we least expect them to. Amongst those things are the times we meet those who later become inspirations in our lives and imprints in our hearts. In my case, it came in the shape of a little boy. His name: Cristian.

I can still recall the day in Mid-August of 2007 when Cristian had already been diagnosed with Pontine Glioma. He was happy as can be, standing on top of an office chair. Cristian looked up at me and gave me half a smile and quickly proceeded to do what was bringing him joy, playing a "Go Diego, GO" CD on his daddy's radio. I instantly knew that Cristian was special. I instantly knew that Cristian would grow up to become a leader (a GREAT one at that). He knew what he wanted and he definitely knew how to get it.

I was blessed to have been able to spend time with him as the months went by. There were times when I would massage him so that he could go to sleep, and remember touching his head and wishing that I could make him all better. I think that feeling not only came from not wanting him to suffer but also from being a mother myself. Cristian loved being massaged on his back and his underarms, and just when I thought that Cristian was sleeping, he would open his eyes, lift his head and tell me not to stop. I also remember trips to the candy store. Cristian would get a baggy and he or his daddy would fill it up with sugar-free candy. My daughter Sharon was a year younger than Cris. She loved to play with him and she was even happier to be bossed around by him. I knew Cristian loved her because he would always ask me for "Shari" when she wasn't with me. And, he always had that "smile" in his face whenever he would tell her what to do.

Wow!! So many wonderful memories are coming back to me, as I write this. Cristian would also say to Shari, "Sharing is Caring"-we would laugh because when it was his turn to hand over the ducky the same rule didn't apply. There are knock knock jokes, trips to FAO Schwartz, Build a Bear, Carmine's and the Bronx Zoo that were all first-time trips for both Shari and I that we will always remember.

So many memories; so many smiles and laughs. How can I possibly forget? It was so hard to see Cristian in the hospital not being able to move, speak, laugh, play and do all those things that 6 year olds are supposed to do. It was so hard to see such a beautiful, loving and caring boy suffer so much and never complain. EVER.

The morning of Cristian's passing was one that I never imagined would come. It was one that never crossed my mind. In my world, I never gave up hope or faith. I always truly believed that this was a dream that would come to pass. Cristian touched me. I carry him in my prayers, always. There's never a time when I don't think of what could have been if he was still physically here with us all.

I feel the tears form in my eyes when I think of Cristian's voice, one that I would never hear again. Both Cris and I were sitting in the back of his daddy's car. As his daddy was driving, Cris and I were holding hands and he looked up at me, took a deep breath and sweetly said, "I Love You"-That would be the last "I Love You" from Cris to me.

So, I go on living life, proud to wear my royal blue wristband, proud to be a committee member, proud of all of the things that Cristian's daddy is doing for this amazing cause and in memory and honor of his son, proud to hand out Cristian Rivera Foundation cards as much as possible, proud to share some of my memories, and proud to spread the word and to know that I truly believe in this foundation. But, most importantly, I carry "The Little Engine That Could"-Cristian Alexander Rivera-in my heart.

Solange Osorio
Proud committee member of The Cristian Rivera Foundation

It's vital that you do your part to help us find a cure for Pontine Glioma and make sure no family has to go through the pain and suffering associated with it. There is strength in numbers and it is only together that we can beat the odds and rid the world of this terrible disease. Feel free to share your thoughts about Cristian, or let us know what you're doing to teach people about Pontine Glioma and motivate them to donate to our cause. You might end up in a future Cristian Rivera Foundation Newsletter too.

The Cristian Rivera Foundation Launches Monthly Newsletter

Monthly Newsletter March 2010

Welcome to the first Cristian Rivera Foundation newsletter. As a valued member of the Cristian Rivera Foundation family, we want to keep you informed each month about everything going on with the Foundation and with the latest advances in medicine that will help realize our dream of a world without Pontine Glioma.

What is Pontine Glioma? It's a rare, inoperable brain stem tumor that predominantly affects children between the ages of 1 1/2 and 10. Only 300 cases are discovered in the United States each year and because there is no cure, its young victims only have 3-18 months to live after they've been diagnosed.

It is thanks to you that 2009 was a successful first year for the Cristian Rivera Foundation. We officially launched in July and went live with our website in August. As you remember, we held our first fundraiser gala on September 29 at Eden, which was also the site of Cristian's memorable fifth birthday. We were touched by everyone who came and donated and showed their support. Pictures and video from the event are available at http://cristianriverafoundation.org/, as well as http://cristian-rivera.com/. You can also see an updated gallery of celebrities sporting the Cristian Rivera Foundation wristband, as well as some of Cristian's original artwork.

All of your hard work is only going to make 2010 a stronger and more fruitful year for the Cristian Rivera Foundation. Our billboard will debut on the West Side Highway in late spring/early summer, and a second gala will once again celebrate Cristian's life around the same time. We will certainly keep you posted as dates, locations and special guests are announced.

Our quest toward finding a cure has also led us to Dr. Mark Souweidane, one of the doctors who conducted various shunt surgeries on Cristian. Dr. Souweidane is the Vice Chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery and the Director of Pediatric Neurological Surgery at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He has dedicated himself to researching these brain tumors and he thinks he has had a breakthrough testing new delivery methods on animals. Dr. Souweidane has many foundations and private donors contributing money to take his research to the next stage: testing on humans.

The Cristian Rivera Foundation is proud to be one of the foundations supporting Dr. Souweidane's research. But we can't make a difference without your help. All of the members of the Cristian Rivera Foundation Committee ask you to visit our website, http://cristianriverafoundation.org/, and make a tax-deductible donation. Pass this newsletter on to your friends, family and colleagues so that they too can get involved.

Another way you can help is to purchase a Cristian Rivera Foundation wristband and wear it to show your support. You'll be in good company. Committee Member DJ Tedsmooth wore his wristband on Good Day New York. Committee Member and Celebrity Chef Ricardo Cardona, along with Committee Member Solange Osorio, wore it for TV interviews on Univision and the Food Network. Committee Member DJ Camilo wears his wristband every day and at all his appearances. So do Committee Members Steve Cox, Pablo Diaz, Kenya Bradix, Victor Martinez, Alex Aviles, Ralph Mercado III and Dr. Ben Velazquez. Celebrities have also been spotted wearing the Cristian Rivera Wristband, like P.Diddy, Kid Capri, model/actress Bobbi Jo, Dina Manzo from The Real Housewives of New Jersey, Juelz Santana and Khaliah Ali, daughter of Muhammed Ali.

We also invite you to become part of our Wristband Project. We give you 10 wristbands to sell and you mail a check for the proceeds to the Cristian Rivera Foundation. Many people have gotten involved in the project and it has proved to be an effective method of raising both awareness and funds. To get involved, email wristbandproject@cristianriverafoundation.org or call 212-779-2222.

Without dedicated people like you, we would not be able to achieve all we have done so far and all we will do in the future. Thank you again and may 2010 be the year we say goodbye forever to Pontine Glioma.

Sincerely,

John "Gungie" Rivera, "Forever Cristian's Daddy", and all of the members of the Cristian Rivera Committee: Alex Aviles, Andy Epstein, Ann Lee Caceres, Anthony Mason, Bill Marin, Boy Wonder, David Maldonado, Denise Miranda, DJ Camilo, DJ Funkmaster Flex, DJ Tedsmooth, Dr. Ben Velazquez, Dr. Mary Saleeby, Edward Caban, Elis Pacheco, Fernando Ferrer, Hamlet Peralta, James Cruz, James R.
